Fad
- a popular activity that lasts for a short period of time.
- Fidget spinners where the biggest fad a couple of years ago.
- It can be difficult for companies to stay up to date with all the new fads for consumers.
Trend
- a more general change or development in people’s behavior.
- Today, there is a trend towards using influencers to promote products instead of using more traditional means.
- Online learning is a growing trend that has lasted years, whereas the ice-bucket challenge was just a fad.
Infused
- to cause something to be filled with the quality of something else.
- The tea is infused with lemon and rose petals.
- The speech she made was infused with hope and optimism.
EXPRESSIONS
Spread like gossip
- When something is disseminated in a rapid way, similar to casual or scandalous talk about people.
- If you tell Jenny anything it will spread like gossip, so keep it to yourself right now.
- This is not something that we can have spread like gossip.
Third time’s a charm
- An idiom used to say that the third attempt at something will be more successful than the previous two attempts.
- I know you weren’t happy about the last two presentations you did, but don’t lose hope – third time’s a charm.
- He didn’t pass his driver’s test the first two times, but you never know – third time is a charm.
