TRANSITIVE VERBS
- These verbs should be followed by a direct object.
- Otherwise, it would sound weird and make no sense.
- Example:
| I love… |
Who or what do you love? |
| I love tennis. |
Tennis is what I love to play. |
| I love books. |
My favorite hobby is reading. |
| I love you. |
The person I love is you. |
| She’s wearing… |
What is she wearing? |
| She’s wearing a suit to work. |
Her uniform for work is a suit. |
| Jenny’s wearing a T-shirt today. |
Jenny is using a T-shirt. |
| He’s wearing pijamas. |
He is not wearing formal clothes. |
INTRANSITIVE VERBS
- These verbs don’t need a direct object after.
- Example:
| We arrived. |
We made to our destination. |
| He lied. |
He didn’t tell the truth. |
| I cried. |
I was sad and let tears run down my eyes. |
| The sun rose at 5:24. |
‘at 5:24’ answers when, so it is not a direct object. |
| Mary is sleeping on the couch. |
‘on the couch’ answers where, so it is not a direct object. |
DIRECT OBJECT
- Noun or pronoun that receives the action.
- It is called ‘Direct Object’.
- A direct object answers the question of ‘who?’ or ‘what?’ received the action of the verb.
TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS
Sometimes, a verb can be both Transitive and Intransitive, depending on the use.

Lucia plays outside. |
| We will continue the meeting after lunch. |
