A Third space/place was invented by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his book The Great Good Place. The first place is your home and the second place is your work or school. This third space is outside of the first and second place where you feel like you belong.
THIRD SPACE/PLACE
- A space where people can gather and feel welcome
- A place where you feel like you belong.
- Examples of third spaces can be churches, restaurants, parks, cultural centers, etc.
- When I was young our third spaces included the backyards and streets around my house and the park. This is where I played with my friends.
- It’s hard for people in their forties and fifties to have third places where they can meet new people.
