
Strike a hard bargain or Drive a hard bargain are a typical expressions used in negotiations. Every year I give courses at the Chamber of Commerce of Alava on negotiations and every year these phrases comes up.
STRIKE A HARD BARGAIN
- used to describe a tough negotiator
- to be very determined to get what you want in a negotiation
- He won’t accept anything less that 30%. He strikes a hard bargain.
- We need to str!ke a hard bargain here because the success of the business depends on it.
DRIVE A HARD BARGAIN
- used in the same way as Strike a hard bargain.
- more common in British English
- I know they drive a hard bargain, but we need to be firm.
- Joan is known for driving a hard bargain, but don’t be intimidated by her.
