Slap in the face is one of those very visual English expressions that we use. If someone slapped you in the face, this would be quite insulting, (just ask Chris Rock) and that’s where we think this expression comes from.
SLAP IN THE FACE
- An insult
- Usually a surprise
- It was a real slap in the face to hire his underling as his new boss.
- It was a slap in the face to get the news in such a public way. I wish she would have told me privately.
