
Here are some things you should take into account when saying the dates in English. To know more about how to say the full date, click here.
2025
- We divide the date up into two sets of numbers: the first two and the second two
- 1524 – fifteen twenty-four
- The battle took place in fifteen twenty-four
- 1816 – eighteen sixteen
- We found a letter that was dated back to eighteen sixteen.
- 2025 – twenty twenty-five
- Twenty twenty-five is going to be a good year.
- 1524 – fifteen twenty-four
- Note that the second numbers are usually hyphenated for numbers higher than 20.

When the date ends in 000 or 00

- When the year ends in 000, we say the first number followed by ‘thousand’
- 2000 – two thousand
- I still find it strange that I have students corn after the year two thousand.
- 2000 – two thousand
- When the year ends in 00, we say the first two digits followed by the word ‘hundred’
- 1600 – sixteen hundred
- He was born in the year sixteen hundred.
- 1800 – eighteen hundred
- There was a fire here in 1800.
- 1600 – sixteen hundred
- Note that it is also common to hear the year 1000 pronounced in both ways
- 1000 – the year one thousand
- 1000 – the year ten hundred
Saying the dates from 01 to 09
- For years that end in 01 to 09, the zero is pronounced ‘oh’
- 1301 – thirteen oh one.
- The museum states that the bowl is from thirteen oh one.
- 1903 – nineteen oh three
- This photograph was taken in ninteen oh three.
- 1301 – thirteen oh one.
- It is also common to hear someone say two thousand and… for the first ten years of 2000.
- 2005 – two thousand and five
- We met in two thousand and five and have been friends ever since.
- 2010 two thousand and ten
- That movie came out in two thousand and ten.
- 2005 – two thousand and five
- You may also hear someone (mostly Americans) say the number without the ‘and’
- 2006 – two thousand six
- She finished college in two thousand six
- 2009
- I started working here in two thousand nine.
- 2006 – two thousand six

1800s

- to refer to 100 years, add the article ‘the’ before the number and add an ‘s’ to the word hundred.
- 1300s – the thirteen hundreds.
- This book is from the thirteen hundreds. Be very careful with it.
- 1600s – the sixteen hundreds
- The book is set in the sixteen hundreds.
- 1300s – the thirteen hundreds.
Common Mistakes
- Remember that each language says dates in a different way, so do not assume that it is the same as another language.
- We do not say

one thousand, eight hundred seventy-six
- 1876 –
