Rub salt in someone’s wound. We all know someone who like’s to ‘hit you when you’re down’ – another greast expression with the same meaning! You are having a bad day… you made a mistake and here comes that person who tells reminds you of all the other mistakes you have made. Sometimes they even think they are helping you! HA! Next time you can say, ‘Stop rubbing salt in my wounds’!
Another good reason to love this expression is that it gives you a very clear image. If you have a cut or a wound, the last thing you want is to put salt in it. OUCH! So, this image of someone making a situation worse is very clear.
RUB SALT IN SOMEONE’S WOUND
- to make a situation worse than it already is
- usually someone will remind you of other flaws or problems you have while you are in a bad situation
- or they make comments that are not helpful but harmful to your present situation
- I told her I felt uncomfortable about my dress and she told me my hair also looks a bit strange. She loves rubbing salt in my wounds!
- We lost the game and then to rub salt in our wounds, they presented the other team with beautiful trophies and we had to sit and watch it.
