
Renew vs Renovate. Sometimes these two words can be confusing, especially for a Spanish speaker since renovate sounds like renovar. These are what we call false friends because the sound the same in two languages but really do not have the same meaning.
RENEW
- to make something new again
- He’s decided to renew his wardrobe and bought all new suits.
- to extend something
- I had to renew my passport today because my old one expires next month.
- My subscription gets automatically renewed every year.
- to bring something back to like
- Having a long weekend really renews my energy.
- Eileen and I have renewed our friendship after not seeing eachother for years.

RENOVATE

- to make something new again
- I renovated the kitchen by painting all the cabinets.
- They are thinking about renovating their whole flat before moving in.
- to talk about improvements to buildings and structures
- Before getting a license, they need to renovate the outside of the building.
- You are only allowed to renovate the inside of old buidings without making many changes to their exterior.
