Fight fire with fire

Fight fire with fire is a great expression to say someone is retaliating. In the news today we can see several examples of this as trade wars are taking place all over the globe due to Trump’s tariffs specifically on aluminum and steel. Countries who have traditionally had very good relationships with the US are being forced to enter into the trade war by also placing tariffs on US products.

to use the same weapons or threats on your enemy that they use on you
use the same methods as your opponent, even if you disagree with what they are doing
- Although I disagree with what they have done, we are going to f1ght fire with fire.
- In order to level the playing field, they are forced to fight fire with fire.
