Exam Writing: Repetitive language. One of the ways to improve your exam score, and your writing in general, is to use varied language. Check to see if you have written the same word more than once and change them up if you have.

Repetitive language

Here is an example of a text that uses the word weather 7 times. Remember you will receive a lower mark for language.

There are three good ways to do this: use synonyms, rephrase your idea all together or add adjectives to the repeated nouns.

Here is the same text with changes to the word weather. This text will earn points for having such varied language.

Synonyms

  • a. The weather was very nice today.
  • b. The day was very nice today.
  • a. … weather made everyone happy.
  • b. … the pleasant conditions made everyone happy
  • a. … the weather was perfect
  • b. … the atmoshphere was perfect.

Reprahase

  • a. The weather was sunny
  • b. The sunshine brightened the sky.

Adjectives

  • a. The weather also encouraged many to ride their bikes
  • b. The good weather also encouraged many to ride their bikes.

Remember that you can look up synonyms in most English language dictionaries online in the Thesaurus section.
