English Vocabulary: Witch Hunt

English Vocabulary: Witch Hunt. This phrase goes way back to the 1400s when people hunted witches and put them on trial for witchcraft. Learn more here. Today we use it in a similar way but for today’s political ideas that are not popular. It is usually used in a negative way.

WITCH HUNT

  • find and punish someone who are seen as not following the social rules of society
  • persecute a group of people for having different ideas.
  • bring attention to people who do not follow the same ideas as the larger part of society.
    • It is said that Donald Trump will do a witch hunt for anyone who doesn’t show their loyalty to him.
    • I think it’s really unfare that they imprison some people for their ideas. It’s a witch hunt!
