Third Spaces/Places
- a term first used by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1989
- refers to places where we gather with other people to feel as though we belong or feel a sense of comunity
- It is the ‘third place’ because your home is considered the ‘first place’ and your work is your ‘second place’
- Governments and city councils need to invest money into third spaces where people can gather together and create a sense of belonging.
- Third places are dissapearing and it’s having a huge impact on lonliness.
Ended up
- phrasal verb
- to find yourself in a certain place or situation
- We were hiking for an hour and then got lost, but we ended up meeting a nice couple who showed us how to get back.
- I didn’t have any plans but ended up having a coffee with some friends in the park.
A meet up / A catch up
- Both come from phrasal verbs
- meet up – to set a time to be with another person in order to do something
- catch up – to discuss the latest news or events since the last time you were together
- a time to sit with people and talk
- Are you free now? Let’s have a catch up.
- I ran into Clare the other day and had a nice meet up.
Guilty
- responsable for doing something wrong.
- In the podcast, Annie says ‘I’m guilty of that too‘ when they were talking about poeple who feel bad if they aren’t doing something productive.
- His client pleaded guilty to the crime.
- It’s quite common for parents to feel guilty about not spending enough time with their kids.
