Genre

  • noun
  • a particular model or style of film, book, show, etc.
  • usually related to a style of art
    • I don’t understand why some people love horror films. It’s the only genre I really can’t watch.
    • True Crime respresents the most listened to genre of podcasts.

Red flag

  • noun
  • A sign of danger
  • Colloquially used to say that something is suspicious in someone’s behavior and should maybe be a warning sign
    • If a potential employer asks you if your married or have children in an interview, I see that as a big red flag and would never accept a job from them.
    • If someone does not like to share any information about themselves, this is usually a red flag that they may be hiding something.

Triggering

  • adjective
  • to start or initiate something.
  • In psychology (how it is used here) it is used to say that something reminds you of a previous trauma or traumatic situation.
  • In the podcast Annie says that seeing people dressed as Jefferey Dahmer can be triggering for victims as this can bring back all their terrible memories and experiences of the real Jefferey Dahmer.
    • Very loud noises can be triggering for people who have been in wars.
    • Sometimes even a smell can be triggering for people who have experienced trauma.

Take advantage of someone/something

  • Use someone or something in a negative way in order to get something you want from them.
    • It seems like he is taking advantage of her because she has a house.
    • Streaming services can take advantage of victims’ stories to make money.
  • NOTE: Taking advantage of something (not of someone) can also be a positive thing
    • I want to take advantage of having some extra free time to spend more time with my kids.
    • Take advantage of the nice weather and go to the pool.
