- Forced to leave a place
- In this episode, Clare uses it to say she was encouraged to leave her family home.
- They were forced out of the bar for causing problems.
- I think there was growing pressure at work that eventually forced her out.
FLAGGING
- Becoming weaker
- Annie was quoting someone who said that technology was flagging young people’s interests in politics.
- In the beginning we had a lot of support, but now interest is flagging.
- Joe is doing everything to save his flagging career.
EXPRESSIONS
SWITCH GEARS
- Change direction
- Annie is using it to say she is going to change the conversation
- Let’s change gears. I think the meeting is getting off track.
- We were in the middle of a conversation when Elena just jumped in and changed gears without even asking.
SWEEP SOMETHING UNDER THE RUG
- to hide something
- to ignore something and not deal with it
- It’s still very common for people to just sweep family problems under the rug.
- This is not something we can just sweep under the rug. We need to deal with it now.
