- to get involved in a difficult situation in order to improve it.
- Experts say that we shouldn’t always intervene in our children’s lives because they also need to learn how to solve their own problems.
- Our staff were arguing so much that the boss finally had to intervene and talk individually with each member.
Bummer
- used to show disappointment or unhappiness about a situation.
- It was such a bummer that he wasn’t able to meet with us today. I was so looking forward to finally meeting him.
- He’s not coming! What a bummer!
Detox
- a period of time when you stop doing or using harmful things in order to improve your mental or physical health.
- She must first go through the detox program before entering the rehabilitation center for drugs and alcohol.
- Dry January is when people stop drinking in the month of January as a type of detox after all the drinking around the Christmas season.
Innate
- An ability you were born with or naturally have.
- She was born with an innate ability for dancing.
- There is a debate in athletics about whether its more important an athlete’s innate ability to play or their drive to improve.
learning curve
- The rate at which someone improves at a new skill.
- I always say it takes almost two years to get used to a new job since there is a steep learning curve.
- One’s learning curve in language acquisition is based on several factors such as environment, their exposure to the language and similarities to other languages they may already speak.
EXPRESSIONS
Follow suit
- to do the same thing as someone else.
- Many international companies are making English their main language and I’m sure other companies may follow suit.
- Well, since everyone is ordering a margarita, I might as well follow suit.
