
English Idioms: Play ball is a common idiom that comes from baseball in the US. A lot of expressions and idioms come from sports. ‘Play ball’ is what the empire says to begin a baseball game. It then started to be used as a way to say we will collaborate together or work together.
PLAY BALL
- To collaborate with someone
- We’ve decided to play ball and the project begins next month.
- Teams always work best when everyone plays ball.
- To agree to someone’s suggested way of working
- Usually implying that you are not wanting to do it
- Are you going to play ball or not?
- We are all leaving at 5:00. Even Julie is going to play ball.
- Either you play ball or we are walking out of here.
