Vocabulary and Expressions
Judge a book by its cover
- to make a decision about how you feel about someone based on their appearances.
- I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I can’t believe the teacher showed up in sweat pants.
- If you always judge a book by its cover, you may miss out on meeting someone who is really kind.
Handshake
- When two people face eachother and stretch out their right hands and shake them.
- I really don’t like when people at work kiss me. It’s not very professional. I prefer a handshake.
- Handshakes, although typically seen as a western greeting, has become internationally accepted.
Dreaded
- Something that causes fear or worry
- Business are still worried there may be another dreaded pandemic.
- Sometimes used to express that you don’t like something
- I’ll leave once I finish the dreaded paperwork.
Dress code
- The accepted way to dress, usually for work, that can be either written or socially accepted.
- The bank has a formal dress code and we are not allowed to wear jeans or sandals.
- Although our company does not have a written dress code, it is obvious that we can dress business casual.
Take something into account
- to consider something when analyzing a situation
- If we John is going to join the team, we need to take into account that he is not in the office on Tuesdays.
- When speaking on the phone, take into account that people know if you are smiling.
