Make your adjectives stronger using these B2 C1 C2 English Vocabulary: Intensifiers. This will help improve your writing and speaking skills on a test, but also get you speaking like a native. Remember to pay attention to the way you pronounce them as we tend to emphasize our intensifiers.

So

  • We tend to use so before an adjective or adverb when used as an intensifier to emphasize what you are saying
    • I was so tired this morning that I went in to work late.
    • Your daughter has gotten so tall since the last time I saw her!

Truly

  • Truly means that is something is true in every way.
    • He truly is a good person.
    • We truly worked on this project as a team.

Really

  • This is used when we want to say something is more than just ‘very’
  • In most cases, with strong adjectives, very doesn’t collocate, so really is really your best option.
    • That’s really interesting.
    • He’s really nice.
    • She really tried her best on the test.

Totally

  • totally is another way to say completely.
    • I totally agree with what you are saying.
    • He totally lost control of the wheel and ran into a tree.

Honestly

  • We use honestly to emphasize that you are telling the truth.
    • Thank you, but I honestly couldn’t have another bite to eat.
    • She honestly doesn’t think that John will be coming tonight.

Absolutely

  • Like totally, we use absolutely to express the same as completely
    • I absolutely love what you have done with your house.
    • She absolutely hated the meal.

Completely

  • This means in every way possible
    • Although the twins look alike, they are completely different from each other.
    • I completely forgot that you were coming over today.

Undeniably

  • This means that something is not deniable, meaning it is 100% true.
    • Climate change is an undeniable fact although some people chose not to believe it.
    • It is undeniably true that the city is expanding.
