Learn B2 C1 C2 English Expressions: back to the salt mines. So, if you know an English speaker, you know that we like to exaggerate just a bit in English. Usually it’s our way of being funny or sarcastic. So, in this expression, we are doing just that. Salt mines are places where there is difficult work to be done, maybe even unsafe conditions. So, we are not REALLY going back to the salt mines. Maybe we have a desk job or a teacher, but we say, ‘it’s time to go to the salt mines’ to lightheartedly say we need to go do work that we may not be excited to do.
Get back to the salt mines
- to return to work after a long or short break
- usually to do work that we don’t like or something that is difficult
- usually said in as a joke
- Well, this summer has been great, but it’s time to get back to the salt mines.
- It’s been nice talking to you, but I’d better be getting back to the salt mines.
- We have a three day weekend and then it’s back to the salt mines.
