When to use ‘a/an’
Use ‘a/an‘ when speaking about a common noun.

Use ‘a/an’ the first time you mention something in the conversation.

I’m watching a movie. The movie is about aliens.
We are buying a new house. The house is close to my work.
He read an article yesterday. The article mentioned his former professor.
When to use ‘the‘
Use ‘the’ when it is obvious what/who are you talking about.
because it was mentioned before:
We bought a desk and two chairs for the office. The desk has arrived but we are still waiting for the chairs. (desk and chairs were previously mentioned)
She gave me a book but I had already bought the same book.
We are buying a new house. The house is close to my workplace.
They want to buy a phone. The phone must be the latest on the market.
because there is only one option:
She’s waiting for us at the train station. (There’s only one station.)
This is the film I wanted to watch. (This film and not other.)
We are going to meet at the front door of the University. (There is only one front door.)
She’s wearing the dress I lent her. (It can only be that dress.)
because we already know what we are talking about:
I’ll see you later at the café. (The café we always go to.)
I’m using the recipe you gave me. (So you know which one is it.)
I need to get to the office. (My office.)
He’s finally dating the teacher. (We gossiped about this topic before.)
Use ‘the’ when the object can be only THE ONE.
